The Institutional Review Board would like to inform and remind researchers of substantial changes to IRB forms, training requirements and submission requirements for biomedical applications. These changes are designed to improve processes and to help researchers develop and communicate their plans for the protection of human subjects in research projects.

The changes include:

  • A significantly revised Health and Biological/Medical (biomedical) application
  • Research plans or protocols required with all new biomedical applications
  • Registration review and registration assistance for clinicaltrials.gov
  • New, revised and retired appendices
  • Changes to basic human subjects training requirements
  • Replacement of “Add Title” form with a new “Add/Remove Funding” form

Please visit the IRB website to learn more about these changes and to access the new applications, appendices, supplemental forms and templates.

For researchers in the process of completing an application, we will continue to accept the previous versions of the biomedical application and appendices through Jan. 31. Effective Feb. 3, 2014, we will only accept the updated versions, and those materials can be found on the IRB forms page of the website.

Drop in sessions

Changes to these forms represent the most significant change to the IRB application in many years. To help ease this transition and provide additional support, the IRB has scheduled weekly drop in sessions for researchers for in-person assistance. Drop in times include:

Jan. 13, 10:00 a.m.
Jan. 21, 2:30 p.m.
Jan. 28, 11:00 a.m.
Feb. 6, 2:30 p.m.

All sessions will be held in the Human Research Protection Program conference room in D528 Mayo. Registration is not required. Additional sessions will be added if there is sufficient attendance and interest.

Contact the IRB office any time with questions or to offer feedback on the forms at 612-626-5654 or irb@umn.edu.
